Try A Trade
The Northern Territory Government is giving 500 Year 9 students the chance to Try’a Trade.
Education and Training Minister Marion Scrymgour said the event is a great opportunity for students to experiment before they commit to an apprenticeship or traineeship.
“It’s important students are aware of all the opportunities they have so they can begin on a career path which suits them best,” Ms Scrymgour said.
“With the strongest economy in the country there is a huge demand for skilled workers and great job opportunities for all young Territorians.
“At Try’a Trade students are able to have a go at 11 different industry areas from welding and plumbing to hairdressing and hospitality.
“Qualified trades people guide the Year 9 students through a variety of small projects which demonstrate the skills needed for each trade.
“Try’a Trade is the first step towards students beginning vocational education training in schools.
“We have a very successful VET program across Territory schools, with 2200 students expected to complete one or more VET subjects in 2008.
“The Henderson Government is committed to providing the very best opportunities for young Territorians to help them establish successful and fulfilling careers.
“Apprentices and trainees are also essential to maintaining our strong economy as they build a skilled workforce which is necessary for the Territory’s continuing growth.
