Building A Workforce Ready For Inpex
The Northern Territory Government is preparing for the rising demand of skilled workers when Inpex begins construction in 2010.
Training Minister, Marion Scrymgour said there are currently a record number of trainees and apprentices in the Territory, many of whom will be ready to work when Inpex begins construction.
“This is an exciting time for the Territory and to make the most of the Inpex project the Territory must be prepared,” Ms Scrymgour said.
“Inpex will need up to 2000 workers to build its Darwin gas plant, the Territory is capable of providing those workers and embracing the jobs Inpex will create.
“In a time of economic uncertainty around the world, the Territory economy is continuing to grow and remains strong.
“The Territory remains a place of opportunity and creating more jobs underpins our strong economy.
“The Northern Territory Government worked hard to secure the Inpex project for Darwin and we are committed to having a workforce ready to make the most of job opportunities.
“The Henderson Government is delivering real results, we have a record number of 22 000 VET students at Territory schools preparing to enter traineeships and apprenticeships.
“We have delivered on the commencement of 10 000 apprenticeships and traineeships over the last four years and we have committed an additional $1 million to deliver another 10 000 trainees and apprentices over the next four years.
“The Henderson Government is providing financial assistance to these young people through the workwear/workgear bonus and employer incentives.
“I’m encouraging all employers to take on an apprentice or trainee Inpex will bring further economic security to the Territory and there isn’t a better time to train someone in a trade of profession.
“Inpex will bring great opportunities to the Territory and we will be ready to make the most of them.
“Yesterday Business Minister Kon Vatskalis said we will be holding forums to help business win Inpex contracts, we are also training Territorians to be ready for high skilled, high wage jobs.
“Our economy is strong and unemployment is the lowest in the country, Territorians are working hard and it will be our apprentices and trainees who continue to build the Territory into the future.
