As Australia’s ageing population continues to put pressure on the aged care industry, a new resource is helping the sector retain existing skilled staff by providing opportunities for its workforce to obtain formal recognition of their skills and experience.
The Aged Care RPL Guide is designed to support and assist existing workers in the aged care industry to compile a portfolio of evidence which can be presented to a registered training organisation (RTO) or qualified assessor for RPL (recognition of prior learning).
The guide supports users gathering evidence for 12 units of competency from both the Certificate III in Aged Care Work and the Certificate III in Home and Community Care.
It includes suggestions for evidence that can be obtained and helpful information to assist users in understanding the performance criteria which they are gathering evidence against.
Each element within a unit of competency provides a list of suggested evidence and users select ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to indicate whether they have the evidence to support the performance criteria. If a user selects ‘yes’, they then proceed to the Portfolio Planner to enter details of the evidence. The Learning Plan picks up any performance criteria for which a user has responded ‘no’.
The guide can be partnered with the Grange Care Services aged care Flexible Learning Toolbox (Toolbox). This allows users to link through to relevant learning resources and content within the Toolbox for any units which they are having difficulty gathering evidence for. Alternatively, users are encouraged to discuss other options for demonstrating competency with their RTO or qualified assessor.
Users can stop at any point through the process, save the work they’ve done so far and pick up where they left off the next time they log in.
The Aged Care RPL Guide was developed by the national training system’s e-learning strategy, the Australian Flexible Learning Framework (Framework).
