An Australian hospitality group is embracing flexible learning opportunities to deliver training to its seasonally-based and graphically-diverse workforce. The Compass Group Induction e-learning demonstration, developed in partnership with Compass Group (Australia) and the William Angliss Institute, can be completed by staff at anytime, anywhere, prior to, or on commencement of, their employment. Funded by the national training system’s e-learning strategy, the Australian Flexible Learning Framework, the demonstration can be accessed via the website or by downloading the content onto a CD-ROM, DVD or mobile devices such as mobile phones and iPods. Compass Group employs over 10,000 hospitality staff across 600 sites in Australia. The demonstration’s flexible format caters for their diverse workforce, geographical spread and irregular hours worked by their staff. Employees are taken through a series of learning modules, including videos and interactive activities, with a focus on hygiene, health, safety and security, and kitchen cleanliness. The demonstration is also expected to assist with employee awareness of the expected conditions at remote sites, by providing a preview of the site facilities. On completion of the learning modules, staff are required to complete an online test which is monitored though the William Angliss Institute’s learning management system.  The demonstration can contribute to nationally recognised hospitality units of competency including:

  • workplace hygiene procedures
  • health, safety and security procedures
  • maintaining kitchen premises.

Although the demonstration is specific to the hospitality industry, it can be used as a guide to developing e-learning across a variety of industries. To access the Compass Group Induction e-learning demonstration, its case study, business plan and other additional information visit the Compass Group e-learning demonstration webpage. For more information about the 40 industry e-learning demonstrations developed between 2005–2007 visit the E-learning for Industry website at: http://industry.flexiblelearning.net.au. This industry-focused website provides rich resources, such as an online Practical guide to e-learning for industry where businesses can discover how to make e-learning work in their organisation.
